The
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) along with Glenmark
Pharmaceuticals Ltd announced the release of a short animated film to highlight the problem of diabetes and obesity in
society. Targeted at school
children, this informative film will be screened in over 100
multiplexes and movie theatres across Mumbai.
The film was launched in the presence of Sanjay S Deshmukh
- Additional Commissioner (Western Surburbs), MCGM, Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean of
KEM Hospital, Mr. Sujesh Vasudevan, President, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd.,
Dr. Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer - MCGM and other
dignitaries. This initiative is a part of Swasthya Main Hai Swaad' campaign of
MCGM focusing on twin themes of healthy eating and exercise to keep diabetes
away.
The
animated informative film will be screened in the theatres from Friday, July 24th
onwards. The timing of the film appears favorable with chartbusters like
Bahubali & Bajrangi Bhaijaan attracting huge crowd in the theatres.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay S Deshmukh said, “An
increasingly sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy dietary intake has led to an
explosion in diabetes. MCGM has initiated several programmes for raising awareness of this
ever-growing disease. This informative
film which we are launching in partnership with Glenamrk is another innovative
medium through which we are reaching out to the masses”.
Sujesh Vasudevan, added “India has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the
world's capital of coronary heart disease and diabetes. It is necessary to raise awareness of the importance
of a healthy lifestyle in reducing risks of such diseases. We are happy to be
partnering an institution like MCGM in spreading the message of leading
a healthy lifestyle to the masses. Glenmark is committed in making
a positive difference in healthcare of people through our high quality
medicines and awareness initiatives.”
The short animated film displays different lifestyles of two young kids.
One of them is pursuing healthy lifestyle by eating right food, exercising,
playing different sports, etc., whereas the other child is exposed to unhealthy
lifestyle like eating all types of junk foods, lazing around, watching TV,
sleeping, etc. The idea is to create a sense of realization among parents and
children to adapt a healthy & disciplined lifestyle and avoid disease like
obesity & diabetes.
MCGM started ‘Control
Diabetes and Hypertension – Act Now Programme’ since 2011. Under this program,
the corporation is providing services for detection of diabetes, treatment,
follow-up and support through its 80 dispensaries. Till date, 90644 patients
(23040 Old / 67604 New) are screened for diabetes and there are 18673 newly detected
cases. 10 to 12 thousand patients’ follow-up regularly at these dispensaries
for treatment.
