The
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) along with Glenmark
Pharmaceuticals Ltd announced the release of a short animated film to highlight the problem of diabetes and obesity in
society. Targeted at school
children, this informative film will be screened in over 100
multiplexes and movie theatres across Mumbai.
The film was launched in the presence of Sanjay S Deshmukh
- Additional Commissioner (Western Surburbs), MCGM, Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean of
KEM Hospital, Mr. Sujesh Vasudevan, President, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd.,
Dr. Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer - MCGM and other
dignitaries. This initiative is a part of Swasthya Main Hai Swaad' campaign of
MCGM focusing on twin themes of healthy eating and exercise to keep diabetes
away.
The
animated informative film will be screened in the theatres from Friday, July 24th
onwards. The timing of the film appears favorable with chartbusters like
Bahubali & Bajrangi Bhaijaan attracting huge crowd in the theatres.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay S Deshmukh said, “An
increasingly sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy dietary intake has led to an
explosion in diabetes. MCGM has initiated several programmes for raising awareness of this
ever-growing disease. This informative
film which we are launching in partnership with Glenamrk is another innovative
medium through which we are reaching out to the masses”.
Sujesh Vasudevan, added “India has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the
world's capital of coronary heart disease and diabetes. It is necessary to raise awareness of the importance
of a healthy lifestyle in reducing risks of such diseases. We are happy to be
partnering an institution like MCGM in spreading the message of leading
a healthy lifestyle to the masses. Glenmark is committed in making
a positive difference in healthcare of people through our high quality
medicines and awareness initiatives.”
The short animated film displays different lifestyles of two young kids.
One of them is pursuing healthy lifestyle by eating right food, exercising,
playing different sports, etc., whereas the other child is exposed to unhealthy
lifestyle like eating all types of junk foods, lazing around, watching TV,
sleeping, etc. The idea is to create a sense of realization among parents and
children to adapt a healthy & disciplined lifestyle and avoid disease like
obesity & diabetes.
MCGM started ‘Control
Diabetes and Hypertension – Act Now Programme’ since 2011. Under this program,
the corporation is providing services for detection of diabetes, treatment,
follow-up and support through its 80 dispensaries. Till date, 90644 patients
(23040 Old / 67604 New) are screened for diabetes and there are 18673 newly detected
cases. 10 to 12 thousand patients’ follow-up regularly at these dispensaries
for treatment.

Beware of leg sore in summer
Study suggests
leg cramps at its peakin summer as in winter.
Dr Hitesh Kubadia,Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at HKS Clinic, Dadar.
If
you are an athlete, an expectant mother or a senior
citizen, the night time leg cramps becomes a regular feature – especially
during summer. Heat injury may result in mild heat cramps to life-threatening
heat stroke.
A
growing number of children and young adults are found playing sports during summer.
As more people exercise in hot conditions, muscle cramp is a common feature and
often occurs when the muscle is overused or injured. Working out when you
haven’t had enough fluids or when you have low levels of minerals such as potassium
or calcium can also make you more prone to muscle spasm. Muscle cramps can
occur while you play tennis or golf, bowl, swim, or do any other exercise.
“It’s
not just the athletes who suffer from leg cramps, but even pregnant women and
people over the age of 50 years are also affected by the seasonal problem. It’s
a shockingly prevalent issue during summer time. Figures show that one in three
people over the age of 50 years will have at least one or more cramps a day,
half of those people experience it multiple times at night,” informed Dr Hitesh
Kubadia,Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at HKS Clinic, Dadar.
Elaborating
on the co-relation between summer time and leg cramps, DrKubadia, said, “In summers,
the weather is much warmer and this causes us to sweat and loose body fluids at
a much faster rate. Sweat contains magnesium and potassium in the form of
electrolytes. This loss causes a low-grade deficiency which results in
increased muscle cramps. The fluid loss causes possible dehydration as well.”
“Muscle
cramps, also known as spasm or twitches, are a noticeable increase in muscle
tone for no apparent reason. This increase can be intense enough to cause an
increased pain. Often cramps occur during sleep or rest and sometimes they
occur with exercise. If they occur with activity, cramps will predispose you to
‘muscle pulls’, added DrKubadia.
Doctors
warn people to prevent heat injury. Prevention begins with understanding the
causes of heat illness. “Knowing the signs of heat injury and being able to
treat it immediately will reduce the number of severe cases. Possible
preventive measures include taking daily supplements of calcium, magnesium and
potassium and drink lots of water,” says DrKubadia.
Medical care
when you have suffered from muscle cramp:
If you have a
muscle cramp, stop your activity and try stretching and massaging the muscle.Heat
will relax the muscle when the spasm begins, but ice may be helpful when the
pain has improved. If the muscle is still sore, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
medications can help with pain. The most common cause of muscle cramps during
sports activity is not getting enough fluids. Often, drinking water will ease
the cramping. However, water alone doesn't always help. Salt tablets or sports
drinks, which also replenish lost minerals, can be helpful.
Other tips for
relieving muscle cramps:
·
Change your
workouts so that you are exercising within your ability.
- Drink plenty of fluids while exercising and increase
your potassium intake (orange juice and bananas are great sources of
potassium).
- Stretch to
improve flexibility.

2 more donors from city offer UP toddler blood
- Sumitra Debroy
|
A day after three units of the precious Bombay group were sent from Mumbai to Blood New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) for a 15-month-old toddler from UP , the surgery could not be carried out as scheduled. Doctors said treating Arun Kumar's grave congenital heart condition may require more units of blood.
An executive from Pune and two Mumbaikars had donated three units, which were couriered to Delhi on Thursday . The hospital said on Friday that carrying out the surgery without adequate blood backup would be risky and subsequently made a fresh request for an additional three units. By evening, Vinay Shetty of the Think Foundation NGO managed to gather two more persons who donated two more units. “The blood collected from Pravin Shinde (35) and Swapna Sawant (31) will be sent to Delhi on Saturday . Hopefully, the surgery can take place with this,“ he said.
Less than 190 people have the Bombay Blood group in India.Cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr A K Bisoi from AIIMS, who will be operating upon the child, told TOI that it was nothing less than a miracle that the child was alive. “This child is born with a reverse connection in the heart, called transposition of great arteries. The body does not get pure blood that is pumped from the lungs. It is an extremely lifethreatening complication and most children do not live beyond a few months of birth. By now the left side of his heart is very weak to pump blood to the whole body ,“ he said, adding that the child needs to undergo surgery at the earliest. “Each day is crucial for him,“ the surgeon said.
Bisoi added that while such surgeries can be performed with four units of blood, Kumar's case was exceptional. “We have to keep a backup as he cannot be transfused with blood from any other group. He may have to stay on the heart-lung machine for longer post-surgery ,“ said Bisoi. He applauded efforts by Mumbaikars and the Pune resident to save the child. “More awareness must be created about the rare blood group,“ he said.
Shetty suggested that blood banks in Delhi must create a registry, like in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
Kumar's father Sandesh, a farmer from UP , said each passing day was causing them more anxiety . “We are running against time. It is such a helpless situation for us as well as the doctors,“ he said. Bisoi said the child will be taken in for surgery as soon as all units of blood are arranged for. The family has deposited Rs65,000 with the hospital for the procedure.

Crippled by
Rheumatoid Arthritis at young age - Dr Hitesh Kubadia, Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Nova Specialty Hospitals
A rising
number of youngsters are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis today. Even
children are affected at times. What are the reasons for this?
25-year-old
Siddharth Sinha was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. The diagnosis
came as a shock for him as the common belief is that arthritis affects people
above 50. As per the WHO report, one in six people and one in three families
suffer from arthritis in India. The alarming trend is that the disease now
affects even the young lot. As per the
recent data, 25% patients belong to the age-group of 24 to 40 years.
Rheumatoid
arthritis is not an inherited disease. Researchers believe that some people
have genes that make them susceptible to the disease. People with these genes
will not only automatically develop rheumatoid arthritis. There is usually a
"trigger," such as an infection (often viral infection) or
environmental factor, which activates the genes. When the body is exposed to
this trigger, the immune system responds inappropriately and instead of
protecting the joint, the immune system begins to produce substances that attack
the joint. This is leads to the development of rheumatoid arthritis. Though Rheumatoid
Arthritis can affect any age group, it more often affects the middle age group.
Although
there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, there are a number of treatment
options that can help relieve joint pain and improve the functioning of legs.
The aim of the treatment is to attain remission. The treatment plan is tailored
to the patient's needs and lifestyle. Rheumatoid arthritis is often treated by
a team of healthcare professionals. These professionals may include
rheumatologists, physical and occupational therapists and orthopaedic surgeons.
Juvenile
Rheumatoid arthritis is known to have genetically complex traits in which
multiple genes are important for disease onset and manifestations, and it is
characterized by arthritis that begins before the age of 16 years, persists for
more than 6 weeks, and is of unknown origin.
Causes of rheumatoid arthritis
There's a lot to love about winter;
breathing crisp air, sipping hot chocolates and rugging up in thick coats and
scarves. But stiff and sore joints can be a distinct down side to the cooler
months; and there are plenty of people with arthritis who believe cold weather
makes their condition worse.
Symptoms
In rheumatoid arthritis, the areas
affected include the neck shoulders elbows wrists and hands especially the
joints at the base and middle of the fingers but not the joints at the end of
the fingers. In the lower extremities rheumatoid arthritis can affect the hips
knees ankles and the joints at the base of the toes. Rheumatoid arthritis tends
to spare the low back. The joints affected tend to be involved in a symmetrical
pattern. That is if knuckles on the right hand are inflamed it is likely that
knuckles on the left hand will be inflamed as well. This symmetry is not found
as often in most other types of arthritis.
Fatigue in Rheumatoid Arthritis is
due to many factors. It can be due to the inflammation which produces chemicals
called cytokines that commonly cause fatigue. People with RA might have a mild
anemia that also might contribute to fatigue and the sleep disturbance from
night time pain may also be a factor. Finally people with RA tend to decrease
their exercise and thus lose stamina and strength and this might also play a
role in their fatigue.
Treatment
The immediate form of arthritis
treatment involves relieving pain and reducing inflammation stop or slow down
joint damage and improve function and patient well-being.
Since the disease may vary from
person to person, the treatment program should be designed to best meet each
person’s needs taking into account how severe the arthritis and individual
lifestyle and preferences. Often the use of two or more medications at a time
each serving a distinct purpose is necessary. Some of these medications can
affect the immune system, making monitoring a requirement for treatment.
